Note from the President-Elect

Transforming through Networking
by Amy Cole, President-Elect

Prayers are coming your way for a very happy and successful year. I know we are all so busy with a new year upon us, but am encouraged to know that I am in one of, if not the best profession there is--school counseling. As I think about our state and district theme, "Transforming Lives", I feel as counselors that WE play a very significant part in the lives of the students we serve. We also serve in positions of support to administration and our colleagues. Sometimes, we, ourselves feel the burdens of our jobs on top of our own every day dealings and need "transformation" ourselves. That is when we turn to the networking across our profession through MSCA and SMSCA.

There isn't any better network in the system of education than that of school counselors. MSCA and SMSCA provide counselors with the networking we need to deal with some of the curves that life throws us both in our jobs and our personal lives. These curves sometimes makes it difficult to determine what needs to take care of first and what can wait just a little longer. We counselors spend a lot of time trying to keep "our ducks in line." We take all those responsibilities, as our ducks, and try to keep them organized. Many times when we look, we find they're not all our ducks. No wonder they won't line up! With that being said I would like to invite you to the SMSCA Fall Luncheon. One of our own, Malinda Reagan, will be presenting, "They're Not All Your Ducks..." Please plan to attend and share in a most motivational, exciting, and fun program with your fellow counselors across the district. It will be Friday, October 29, at the Ramada Oasis Convention Center, 2546 N. Glenstone, Springfield, MO. Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. with the meeting to begin at 9:00 and lunch to be served at 11:30. Cost is $20. Login to register online or download the registration form.

Another means of transforming through networking is through our state and district fundraising for support of organizations that help others. We can play a part in transforming the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves who are in need of medical assistance and financial support. We are requesting your participation in the raffle that will be held at our fall luncheon. If you have never been to an SMSCA fall luncheon, you need to make plans to attend and participate in our very interesting and impressive raffle. The Governing Board provides items for the raffle, but welcomes any white-elephant donations that you might be interested in providing. The more items--the more names that get to be drawn. At the state level, we invite your donations of either $$ or items to complete baskets for the silent auction that will be held at the MSCA fall meeting at Tan-Tar-A on November 7-9. This year's proceeds from the sale of the baskets will benefit the Shriner's Hospital. Themes for the baskets are baby, romance, tools, & pets. If you would like to donate for the baskets, please give your money or items to one of the board members or bring to the fall meeting.

Be sure to come back to our web-site (www.smsca.org) often to view articles, resources and events of the up-coming year in which you will have an opportunity to participate.
